Water sports and surfing in Bali
Bali, as a tourist destination, is often viewed as an island of beaches where people can spend long hours lazing in the sun. Yet, Bali has more to offer than just beaches. The volcanic, coral reef-fringed coastline makes it an ideal destination for various water sports activities.
Snorkelling
Bali's spectacular coastline is ideal for water activities including snorkelling. Visitors can view abundant marine-life on the reefs off Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Benoa. Other popular snorkelling destinations in Bali include Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, Padangbai, Candidasa, Tulamben, Amed, Lovina and the stunning Menjangan Island. This island is the best place for snorkelling in Bali. The sport can be enjoyed in any area that has coral reefs and snorkelling gear is easily available for rent. Visitors can take advantage of snorkelling tours offered by many professional tour companies. A full day snorkelling tour usually includes equipment, lunch and refreshments, guide, and transfer.
Surfing
Surfing is by far the most popular activity in Bali and more so in South Bali. Experienced surfers head for the small coves beneath the cliffs of Ulu Watu while the beaches around Kuta-Legian are best suited to beginners. Lessons are available along with equipment rental from several outlets along the beach.
Scuba Diving
Given its reputation as a surfing destination, people are pleasantly surprised to learn that Bali also has some great dive sites. The south western part of Bali has all the great surfing sites where as the north eastern side has calm waters filled with fantastic corals that are ideal for diving.
Submarine safari
Odyssey Submarine, one of its only kinds in South Asia, takes you to an underwater adventure and gives you the opportunity to observe tropical marine fauna and flora, brightly colored fish, delicate corals and unusual plant life.
Cruises
Enjoy a cruise on the sparkling waters of Bali to its neighbourhood islands Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Nusa Lembongan is especially popular because of the presence of offshore coral reefs that make it an excellent spot to dive, snorkel and surf. You can choose between modern cruisers, smaller sailing boats, or catamaran. Relax to the sound of winds and see the dolphins playing in the warm tropical waters. Also see some of the lesser visited coves and lagoons. You can choose from day trips to romantic sunset cruises and dinner cruises with boat rides.
